The Mi Amigo book is almost ready

Exactly 40 years ago, Radio Mi Amigo came to an end. And just now the book about this legendary offshore radiostation is being printed and bound to be delivered on 27 September. This is still in the scheduled month of September, but a little later than planned. This is because the book is no less than 40 pages thicker than originally planned. In short, not six but seven chapters, 200 pages 504 photos and the whole story about the radioships MV Mi Amigo and Magdalena and off course Radio Mi Amigo International.

In the first chapter you can read about the offshore radiostation and the MV Mi Amigo (formerly the Magda Maria and the Bon Jour) in the sixties and how Radio Caroline came to a temporary end in 1968. The competition between North Sea and Veronica, the return at sea of the MV Mi Amigo and Radio Caroline and the Atlantis story will be discussed in chapter two. Radio Mi Amigo and owner Sylvain Tack are in the picture from chapter three onwards, first as a non-legal station. In chapter four, illegality, the invasion, the flight to Spain are the main themes.

Chapter five deals with the increasing live programmes and the personnel problems in Playa d'Aro. As in the previous chapter, in chapter six you will read about the hunt for Mi Amigo staff and the juridical problems, but also the whole story about Hollandia and the unexpected end of Mi Amigo on ‘the old lady’ and its real reason. In chapter seven you'll find for the first time the whole story about the Magdalena including the dramatic ending and aftermath.

If you want to pre-register for € 35, then you better be quick, because the book will be available from 1 October and than pre-registration will of course will be ended. The book will then cost 39 euros plus postage costs, which vary from country to country. All information and the new bankaccount number for the order can be found from 28 September on www.miamigoboek.eu and until that date you can still pre-register for the price of € 35 with the postage included. All pre-subscribers so far, can expect the book at home soon after the issue date.

RNI returned as an RSL station in August 1999. From August 3rd till August 30th 1999, the station broadcast from the LV-18 (the former Trinity House lightship No. 18) which was nicknamed the "Mebo III". The ship had been towed to a postion off Holland-on-Sea. The broadcasts were taking place on mediumwave 190 metres (1575 kHz). Some former offshore jocks and technicians participated in the venture (Paul Graham, Paul MacLaren, Alan West, Norman Barrington, Dick Palmer, Dennis Jason, Bob Noakes, Kevin Turner, Bob LeRoi, Ray Anderson, Dave Rodgers, Dave West and Phil Mitchell). Together with Graham Vine, Chris Baird, Clive Boutell, Mike Read and Colin Lamb they were reliving the year 1970. "I can't understand the Government's attitude over the pirates. Why don't they make the BBC illegal as well - it doesn't give the public the service it wants, otherwise the pirates wouldn't be here to fill the gap. The Government makes me sick. This is becoming a Police State. They should leave the pirates alone. At least they've had a go, which is more than the BBC has done..."
